"There are nine million bicycles in Beijing," Katie Melua once sang but it seems the Georgia-born singer has upgraded her favoured mode of transport. In a sign of the rock n roll times, Melua's new gig is to become European Brand Ambassador for Opel/Vauxhall motors. Melua, 26, was worth some £18 million by 2008 after a run of big-selling albums but apparently lost half of that sum in the global economic crash. With sales declining everywhere, artists who want to stay on independent labels like Katie, have to look for commercial opportunities to get by. Wasn't Melua big on environmental campaigning, though?

Katie Melua to switch on Eton Christmas lights <--click for full story

This is the closest thing to crazy Eton has ever been. The town will be making way for a successful singer / songwriter to switch on its Christmas lights next weekend. The organisers, Eton Traders Association, have secured Katie Melua to do the honours at the ceremony on Saturday. The event will start at 5pm with a short carol in Eton College Chapel, to which all the local community is invited.
